Emy and Derek were married at Edgewood Valley Country Club this past June. This picture above? A little after they officially said I DO in front of a room full of loved ones. But even before that emotional ceremony, the day was filled with not 1, not 2, but 3 first looks, a LOT of wedding party pictures, and one very happy couple.
I loved photographing their engagement session in downtown Chicago. They were so easy going and I immediately knew afterwards that they would be so much fun to photograph on their wedding. They make each other laugh and smile so effortlessly, and Emy got quite the reaction when Derek saw her all dressed up for the first time. It was honestly one of the sweetest first looks AND ceremony I’ve photographed. He even had me getting emotional behind the camera! <3
Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this day, and loved reading the responses they gave to my post wedding survey. I send questions to all of my couples to share on their blog post. It gives a little personal touch to their story and shares advice for future couples as well.
READ A LITTLE ABOUT EMY & DEREK:
Q. When did you meet? Where? Summer of 2016. June 19th to be exact. We met at Old Town Pour House here in Chicago.
Q. When did you get engaged? Where? Fall 2017. Maui, HI. It was supposed to be on a sunset cruise. The cruise was canceled 15 minutes before it was scheduled to start. So we went to dinner, which was awful, and then under the Banyan Tree (allegedly the largest of its kind in the US). A crazy homeless lady saw our engagement and blessed our upcoming marriage.
Q. What’s one thing about your spouse that made you realize you wanted to marry them?
Derek : Emy is hyper competitive and I love it so much. We trash talk about stupid Snapchat games. I also told Emy I loved her after knowing her for 2 weeks.
Q. What was the most important aspect for you two when planning your wedding?
We wanted to make sure that everyone who came had a good time.
Q. How did you start your wedding planning process?
Referrals and Google. Liz did Emy’s friend Kelly’s wedding and was priority number one after setting the date. (Kelly and Matt)
Q. How did you choose your wedding venue (s)?
Emy’s parents are members of a country club so it was the natural and best choice.
Q. What was your favorite thing about your wedding day?
The speeches! (Scroll to see their hilarious reactions.)
Q. What was your first dance song?
Say you won’t let go originally by James Arthur but we had a duet version. (And they sang to each other the whole time – beyond sweet!)
Q. Where did you go for your honeymoon?
Q. Can you give any advice for future couples planning a wedding?
Elope…jk, sort of. Make sure you get Liz as your photographe. (Um, you two are the BEST!) 😉
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!

We started the day with the ladies at the salon while they got hair and makeup done. It was sweet to watch Emy’s grandmother and friends and family get so excited for her. With makeup on and done, we headed to Emy’s parents house to get some cute robe pictures, with the sweetest family dog, and get Emy into her dress.Emy’s dress was so gorgeous. LOVED the detail!Time to show the ladies!Like I said earlier, they didn’t just have 1 first look, they had 3. The first was a sweet moment between Emy and her dad. <3I’m pretty sure we were all crying here. <3 <3 <3Bags in hand, we made our way to meet Derek and the rest of the wedding party at Edgewood.
We wanted to make sure we hurried through pictures as a possible storm was making its way towards us fast. The handsome groom all ready to see his bride…or so he thought! While she was getting ready, Emy mentioned that her prom dress from High School just happened to be white.
She then asked if I thought it would be ok to have the best man put it on and ‘surprise‘ Derek, to which I immediately responded “Obviously!“. Needless to say, Derek was VERY surprised.
The poor guy was already so emotional before he even turned around, waiting with so much anticipation to see Emy.
I think this helped to calm any nerves he had…or at least we hope it did. 😉
A successfull (we HOPE) first look #2. Derek, you were a good sport for this one!#RUNAWAYBRIDE
LOL!Moments later, after all the laughs were out, Emy’s bridemaids brought her over to FINALLY see Derek.
First look #3!And the emotions came out even more. <3 <3 <3These are the sweetest!Just the best man chillin in his white prom dress. HA!Still racing to beat the storm coming in, we hurried to get a few of the couple and meet up with their entire wedding party.
Such a gorgeous day!
Helloooooo BIG and BEAUTIFUL wedding party!
Emy, you are a STUNNER!We had to make the call earlier in the day to move the ceremony indoors because of the chance of rain.
Luckily, the room where they would hold it was beautifully decorated.During their vows, Derek got pretty emotional talking about the day and Emy. It truly was beyond sweet!MARRIED!!!After dancing their way out of the ceremony, we snapped a few extra pictures ‘officially married‘ before the reception.
Their white tented reception = <3 <3 <3MR. & MRS.!!!Dad speeches followed by the MOH and BM.
These were a favorite for Emy and Derek, and me!
So many sweet stories and little moments that had everyone both laughing AND crying. TIME TO DANCE!!!This dance floor did NOT stop. It was a blast to watch all night!Emy explained that the bouquet she was using for her toss was the same one she had caught at this couple’s wedding.
I loved that she still had it for hers! And then Derek put ON A SHOW!!!This had everyone wide-eyed and laughing.
Derek, you were quite entertaining. (And I’m really glad you didn’t hurt yourself !) 😉Like brother like…SISTER!
These two showed everyone up on the floor. HA!With a little help from my friends…Right before I headed out, karaoke officially started with a song from the groom to his bride. You two were a BLAST to photograph and I LOVED your day!Cheers to many more happy days like this!
I cannot thank you both enough for allowing me to be a part of these memories with you.
I wish you both so much happiness, happy tears, and lots of crazy dancing. 😉
HUGSThanks to my 2nd Genevieve for snapping me ‘talking to Emy‘ and directing for the ‘first look‘. No joke, I was really calling out Emy! HA! 😉
