When I first met Katie and Lucas, they were so open and willing to answer any questions I had about their day, and more importantly, trusted me when I directed them during their engagement session. They were planning a Chicago wedding from Boston, so I knew they depended on opinions and recommendations more than anything. I was beyond humbled that they were highly recommended to book with me from my amazing past couples. <3
They also happened to be my last engagement session of the Fall and ended my season with the best session! We got so many pictures with the Chicago skyline and spent the afternoon running around the Art Institute (because it was so cold out, surprise, surprise). Luckily, their wedding was in Summer the next year and I knew that whatever city pictures they couldn’t get during the engagement would be done then. Well, as you’ll see throughout this post, we did all the extra pictures we wanted and THEN some. With a smaller wedding party of 6, we walked around the River North area on one of the most beautiful July days in Chicago.
After getting ready a few floors apart at the Chicago Renaissance hotel, we made our way to Wabash street bridge where Lucas was patiently waiting for Katie to come meet him. Their first look was so sweet, just them, (well, and us photographers…and well, random people walking by and stopping to watch). But that’s what makes getting married downtown so fun. You never know what will happen around you. They had blue skies with barely any clouds and gave me a ton of time for pictures. We had so much fun! Afterwards, we made our way to their reception venue, Galleria Marchetti, where they were able to see their gorgeous ceremony and reception set up before officially saying I DO. It was a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by one of the best dance floors. And to top it off, Lucas’s family brought in a TON of delicious and home made Brazilian desserts. And you bet I tried them all! 😉 This day was unforgettable and such a blast to photograph, especially the late night sparkler exit!

READ A LITTLE ABOUT KATIE & LUCAS:
Q. When did you meet? Where? We matched on Hinge during labor day weekend, 2014, and met in person a week and a half later at Municipal Bar in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.
Q. When did you get engaged? Where? After a long process of trying to mastermind a perfect situation, Lucas woke Katie up early on August 11th, 2018, with the promise of a “very short hike” in the lakes region of New Hampshire. “Shortly” after, Lucas proposed at the top of Rattlesnake Mountain overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee – our favorite spot in New England. A kind but very surprised Irish couple had offered to take our picture with no knowledge of what was about to happen. Katie’s parents helped us celebrate with some champagne back at the lake house.
Q. What was the most important aspect for you two when planning your wedding?
Having fun! We prioritized decisions that would make us and our guests enjoy our wedding. The result was a 3-day party during which the two of us had a blast throughout.
Q. How did you start your wedding planning process?
We started planning our trip on the drive back from New Hampshire to Boston by discussing each other’s must-haves and by starting to write down the guest list. Throughout the rest of the process, we leaned heavily on friends for advice and recommendations, including being recommended our amazing photographer. (Thanks guys!) 😉
Q. How did you choose your wedding venue?
Turns out people book out wedding venues way more than 12 months in advance. Intent on having a less than 12-month engagement, we were limited by availability but found a great downtown venue that would give our guests a dynamic experience during the event and a single contract for multiple vendors to make it easy for us.
Q. What was your favorite thing about your wedding day?
The energy level of our guests really stopped us in our tracks. People that never dance were jumping up and down in the middle of dance circles.
Q. What was your first dance song?
Couple – The Way You Look Tonight (Frank Sinatra)
Dad – What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)
Mom – Forever Young (Rod Stewart)
Q. Where did you go for your honeymoon?
Thailand (Bangkok + Chiang Mai) and Indonesia (Bali + Gili Trawangan)
Q. Can you give any advice for future couples planning a wedding?
Plan it for yourselves and not for anyone else.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
