Are you ready? No really, ARE YOU READY TO SMILE….A LOT??? Almost a year after I blogged about their ENGAGEMENT, I now get to show off their wedding. A day that started out with unpredictable weather ALSO started out with one of the SWEETEST couples I’ve ever met. The weather didn’t even phase these two. I was greeted with hugs and smiles and excitement and that’s exactly how their entire day went.
Ashley & Kevin “met on OKCupid on January 10th, 2015. Within a few messages though, we realized that Ashley had attended Kevin’s New years eve party only 9 days earlier. Unfortunately, Kevin was asleep by the time she showed up and so they didn’t meet at the party at all. Ashley was impressed by Kevin’s Nerd themed mantle over his fireplace and snagged a picture of it before leaving.”
When we talked about what they wanted to do for their engagement pictures, we chatted about Harry Potter and comic book characters as well as using a cool venue for indoor pictures…because it was going to be WINTER! Yep, these two may have picked the coldest season in Chicago for their pictures, but none of us noticed. With their sweet dog Penny along for the fun, we ran around Lincoln Square (my old neighborhood!) and had a blast. We ended their session inside where they rocked some fancy dance moves on stage and got me even more excited for the wedding. (Keep scrolling!)
Two shoes : Yep, Ashley planned to change into her converse for the reception…but that’s not all she changed into…out of? Hmm…keep scrolling! The amazing wedding vendors from their day :
Venue : Lacuna Lofts
Florist : Fab Flora Chicago
DJ : Jitterbug Events
Hair/Makeup : Rebellious Beauty Salon Chicago
Shoes : Converse / Glitter Shoe Co.
Dress : Mignonette Bridal Chicago
Suit : Indochino
READ A LITTLE ABOUT ASHLEY & KEVIN:
Q. When did you get engaged? Where?
A. We got engaged on July 19th 2017 in front of the Grafton Pub on Lincoln Ave. Kevin proposed in the place he was standing when he first saw Ashley coming down the street.
Q. How did the proposal happen?
A. Kevin pretended to have reservations at Gather on Lincoln and they got dressed up and were walking down Lincoln. Kevin had mentioned a few times that the spot right outside the Grafton was his favorite point on Lincoln because it was where he first saw her. When he asked her this time why it was his favorite spot, she rolled her eyes and said it was because that was where he first saw her, but he said no, it was because of this, and got on one knee. He pulled a ring box shaped like a Harry Potter Golden snitch from his pocket and asked her to marry him. They walked into the Grafton where a large group of their friends and family was waiting to welcome them and celebrate.
Q. What’s one thing about your spouse that made you realize you wanted to marry them?
A. Kevin – “She is an amazingly caring person who holds her friends dear to her, and her weirdness compliments mine. We’re frequently making each other laugh in ways that would make other people run from the room.”
Ashley – “I’ve never felt more at home with anyone else in my life. He allows me to feel like i can be goofy and actually tops my silliness more often than not.”
Q. What was the most important aspect for you two when planning your wedding?
A. We wanted to kill it with the first dance and take the energy from our dance and keep it going with a dance floor that never quit. The fact that we extended the dancing an extra hour after we were supposed to wrap it up was proof that we succeeded. (You two NAILED your first dance!)
A. We wanted something that was as far from the traditional wedding venue space as we could get. We wanted something unique and colorful. When we saw the view from the rooftop and walked around and looked at the graffiti everywhere, we were hooked. Also, BYOB was a must so that we could include Kevin’s Brother’s Brewery’s beer. We went a bit above our intended price point on the venue, but it was worth it in the end.
A. Ashley – Taking a shot of whiskey to celebrate signing the certificate.
Kevin – Being surprised with the song Ashley chose to walk down the aisle to.
Q. What were the first dance songs?
A. Kevin + Mom – You Raise me up – Josh Groban
Ashley + Dad – My Little Girl – Tim McGraw
Ashley + Kevin – Moon River – Audrey Hepburn transitioning (with skirt reveal) into Shut up and Dance – Walk the Moon
Q. Where did you (or plan to) go for your honeymoon?
A. 8 days – Relaxing on the beached and eco-tourism on Kauai in Hawaii
3 days – Eating our way through Tokyo, Japan
6 days – Earning our PADI open water SCUBA certification in Cairns Australia and the Great Barrier Reef
3 days – Visiting Hobbiton and wine country in Auckland, New Zealand
Q. Can you give any advice for future couples planning a wedding?
A. Make decisions together. Be open and honest about what is important to you and identify areas you are willing to compromise to help stay on budget. It is about you, not your family, not your friends, at the end of the day, make decisions that will make you happy.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
