Let’s talk about the Wedding Day Timeline.

I wanted to share what a real wedding day timeline looks like from a photographer’s perspective. Because it’s not just “show up for the big moments and leave when the dance floor starts.”

It’s arriving early before the dress is zipped or the tie is straightened. Being there while the nerves are still settling, so those quiet, in-between moments are documented.

It’s staying late past what’s “expected”, because some of the best memories happen when everyone finally lets go on the dance floor.

And those “gaps” in the timeline? When you’re resting, freshening up, or taking a breather, that doesn’t mean there aren’t photos to be taken. That’s when I’m capturing the details, the atmosphere, your people, and the energy of the day unfolding around you.

My personal philosophy?
This is one day you’ve invested so much into, and trusted me to document. I’m going to show up fully for it.

I’ll rest tomorrow. 😉

Your memories deserve more than just the minimum. They deserve intention, presence, and someone who sees the in-between moments just as much as the big ones.

This timeline was from an East Coast-style wedding day where you find structured moments you can’t miss, and fast-moving transitions you have to be ready for.

A full weekend celebration, from the rehearsal dinner to the wedding day. The sweetest couple, the best energy, and a creative team that made it all come together seamlessly.

I never leave a wedding without asking about any last-minute or extra photos wanted. This includes asking the parents of the bride or groom as well. Sometimes, they want photos with their friends or extended family as well.

To future brides and grooms, remember this is YOUR wedding day. I’m there to get the photos YOU want most. Let’s talk out your timeline together and make sure we capture every important moment – big or small.

If you’re searching for a romantic, elegant wedding venue in the Chicago suburbs, a wedding at The Haley Mansion is truly something special. Known for its grand architecture, historic charm, and luxurious atmosphere, the mansion has become one of the most sought-after venues for couples planning a timeless and sophisticated celebration.

As a Chicago wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph several weddings at this stunning venue, and every time I return I’m reminded why couples fall in love with it. From the dramatic staircase to the beautifully designed ballrooms, every space inside the mansion provides an incredible backdrop for both meaningful moments and stunning wedding portraits.

From the moment guests arrive, the mansion creates a sense of occasion. The historic exterior and elegant entryway immediately set the tone for a celebration that feels both grand and intimate.

Couples choose this venue for several reasons:

1. Timeless Architecture
The mansion’s design brings a sense of European-inspired elegance to the Chicago suburbs. Ornate details, tall windows, and sophisticated interiors make every space feel refined and romantic.

2. Stunning Ceremony Spaces
Whether you’re planning a heartfelt indoor ceremony or celebrating with loved ones nearby before the reception begins, the venue offers beautiful spaces that feel both intimate and elevated.

3. A Reception Space Made for Celebrating
The ballroom transforms beautifully for the evening celebration. Once the lights dim and the music begins, the space comes alive with energy as guests gather to celebrate the newlyweds.

4. Incredible Photo Opportunities
For wedding photography, the mansion is full of amazing portrait locations. The iconic grand staircase, elegant hallways, and exterior architecture create a variety of romantic backdrops throughout the day.

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings here is how versatile the space is for portraits. Couples can capture elegant editorial-style photos indoors while also using the mansion’s exterior architecture for classic, timeless images.

Some favorite portrait locations include the grand staircase for dramatic and romantic portraits, the ballroom interiors for elegant couple photos before guests enter, the mansion exterior for classic architectural backdrops, and window-lit hallways for soft, natural light portraits

For couples who love timeless architecture, romantic portraits, and a celebration that feels effortlessly elegant, it’s easy to see why this venue continues to be a favorite.

Some stories feel extra personal to document. The ones where you’re not just the photographer, but part of the story itself.

This year marks 10 years since my sister and her family packed up their life in Chicago and drove west toward something new. Ten years since we loaded cars, said emotional goodbyes, and watched familiar city streets slowly fade into open highways and mountain views.

And somehow, it still feels like yesterday.

Before Colorado became home, Chicago held so much of their story, and mine, too.

Weekend walks through tree-lined streets, kids growing up between seasons, and countless ordinary moments that later became the ones we missed most.

As a photographer, I had the privilege of documenting their family again and again over the years. So many photo sessions scattered across the city, parks we returned to every Summer or Fall, sidewalks filled with laughter, familiar backdrops that watched their family grow alongside my career.

Those photos now feel like a time capsule.

Leaving Chicago wasn’t just a move. It was a leap into a completely different rhythm of life.

Skyscrapers traded for mountain peaks. Busy streets replaced by open trails. Familiar routines rewritten into something entirely new.

Over the past decade, I’ve watched them all grow and thrive in Colorado life. Today, they celebrate ten years in Colorado. Ten years of new traditions, new memories, and a life built among the mountains.

And for me, it’s a reminder of why photography matters so much.

Photos aren’t just about where you are, they’re about when you were there. They hold the transitions, the growth, and the stories we don’t realize are milestones until years later.

From Chicago neighborhoods filled with early memories to the mountain landscapes that now define their everyday life, it has been an honor to document both versions of home for them.

Because no matter the backdrop, city streets or mountain views, family is what makes a place meaningful.

And getting to preserve that story, across miles and across time, is something I’ll never take for granted.

LOVE YOU, MY AMAZING ARABIAN FAM!

And the memories continue…

Your wedding day flies by in a blur of laughter, happy tears, tight timelines, and nonstop celebration. While it’s one of the most meaningful days of your life, it’s not always the most relaxed, especially when it comes to portraits. So why not schedule a post-wedding photoshoot? It’s a chance to slow down, soak it all in, and create stunning images without the rush.

This Romantic Post-Wedding Session in Lincoln Park, Chicago, is the perfect example of why a separate session can be pure magic.

1. No Timeline Pressure, Just the Two of You

On your wedding day, unless we schedule time prior to the ceremony, portraits are often squeezed between the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception events. Even with the best planning, you may only have 30 minutes for couple photos.

A post-wedding session changes everything. Instead of watching the clock, you can wander through your favorite location at your own pace, pause for quiet, candid moments, wait for that perfect golden sunset glow, capture multiple locations without stress, and most IMPORTANTLY, YOU GET TO WEAR YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE AGAIN!

There’s no rush to get back to guests. No coordinator signaling the next event. Just a romantic moment unfolding naturally.

2. Sunset Lighting Without Compromise

Golden hour is one of the most flattering and romantic times to take photos, but it doesn’t always align perfectly with your ceremony schedule. By planning a post-wedding session, you get to pick the day and even season you prefer.

3. More Creative Freedom

Wedding days often require practicality. You might hesitate to walk too far, risk wrinkling your dress, or spend extra time experimenting with poses. A post-wedding shoot gives you freedom to try dramatic, movement-filled shots, explore more locations, and take your time perfecting every detail.

4. A Chance to Relive the Magic

After the wedding, emotions settle, and that’s a beautiful thing. There’s something incredibly intimate about dressing up again and revisiting that just-married feeling. Dancing along the water with the skyline in view becomes less about a checklist of photos and more about celebrating your new chapter.

Who’s in?

Dress: Flora & Lane

An October wedding at Bridgeport Art Center is always magic, but Mackenzie and Kevin’s day felt especially electric, from their intimate first look to their sculpture garden ceremony to the disco-lit dance floor that closed out the night.

To make the most of their day, they chose to do all of their wedding party and family portraits before the ceremony, which set a relaxed tone right from the start. With everyone together early on, we headed to Grant Park in a classic yellow school bus for portraits in front of the iconic Buckingham Fountain. The city skyline made for timeless, energetic photos, especially with such a large wedding party. They even made a quick stop at Kelly’s Pub, their favorite college bar, for a celebratory drink.

With photos wrapped up before the ceremony, the rest of the day flowed seamlessly. The ceremony took place outdoors in the Sculpture Garden, one of those Chicago spaces that somehow feels both industrial and intimate at the same time. Surrounded by their full wedding party and closest family, Mackenzie and Kevin exchanged vows in a moment that felt heartfelt, emotional, and deeply personal.

Guests then moved inside Bridgeport Art Center to the first floor for the reception, where the energy shifted into full celebration mode. Disco balls hung from the ceiling, scattering light across the space and setting the tone for the night. It was equal parts modern art gallery and retro dance party, very Bridgeport Art Center, very Mackenzie and Kevin.

A live band kept the energy sky-high from the first song to the last. Between the band, the glow of the disco balls overhead, and the industrial backdrop of the venue, the reception felt like one continuous, joyful moment, the kind where time seems to disappear.

If you’re dreaming of a Chicago wedding that blends art, energy, and a packed dance floor, this one set the bar sky-high. ✨

CHEERS FRIENDS!

There’s something magical about watching the city skyline come to life as you glide down the Chicago River, especially when it’s with your closest family and friends, toasting to the beginning of an unforgettable wedding weekend.

For Greg and Mark, that’s exactly how they chose to welcome their guests: with a sunset celebration aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises, planned to perfection by Kelly of Shannon Gail Events.

Why Host a Welcome Party?

A welcome party is the perfect way to greet guests, especially those traveling in from out of town, and set the tone for the weekend ahead. It breaks the ice, gives everyone a chance to connect before the big day, and lets the couple spend relaxed, meaningful time with loved ones in a more casual setting.

But this wasn’t just any welcome party. With the river glistening beneath them and the skyline glowing above, this night was pure Chicago charm, and pure joy.

The Venue: Chicago’s First Lady Cruises

Hosting a welcome party aboard Chicago’s First Lady combines elegance and entertainment with an iconic city experience. Guests boarded the boat at golden hour, greeted by drinks, fun music, and unforgettable views.

The cruise offered a fresh breeze, unobstructed photo ops, and an atmosphere that felt elevated yet completely comfortable. As the sun set behind the city and the lights reflected on the water, the evening felt more like a movie than a gathering.

A Chicago Welcome Like No Other

There’s something uniquely memorable about hosting part of your wedding weekend on the water. It gives guests an immersive Chicago experience they’ll never forget and gives you a moment to pause, breathe, and soak it all in before the main event.

Whether you’re dreaming of something intimate and romantic or lively and energetic, a First Lady Cruise welcome party sets the perfect tone.

The getting-ready portion of the day is one of my absolute favorites to photograph. It’s the calm before the celebration, filled with anticipation, laughter, and those quiet in-between moments you’ll want to remember just as much as the reception. But to get the most out of these photos, a little intentional planning can go a long way. Here’s what I recommend for the best getting-ready photos on your wedding day:

1. Choose a Thoughtfully Lit Space

Natural light is a photographer’s best friend. If you have a choice, opt for a room with large windows and lots of soft, natural light. It makes a huge difference in the look and feel of your photos—skin tones are more flattering, and details photograph beautifully. Bonus: clean, neutral walls and minimal clutter help keep the focus on you.

2. Keep the Space Tidy (or designate a ‘messy’ corner)

Getting ready can be chaotic, and that’s totally okay! But designating one area for bags, clothes, coffee cups, and curling irons helps keep the rest of the room photo-ready. If there’s a couch, window, or chair you love, we’ll naturally gravitate toward it for portraits—so keeping that space clear is key.

3. Have Your Details Ready to Go

Before I arrive, set aside your key details. This would include the rings, invitations, perfume, shoes, jewelry, vow books, and anything else meaningful to you. This allows me to jump right in and start documenting everything, while you sip coffee (or champagne!) and soak in the moment.

4. Coordinate (But Don’t Overthink) What Everyone Wears

Matching robes or pajamas are a cute touch, but not required. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and confident. Solid colors or soft patterns tend to photograph best, especially in neutral tones or something that complements your wedding palette.

5. Build in Buffer Time

Things often take a little longer than expected—hair, makeup, final steams. Giving yourself extra time helps avoid rushing and leaves room to enjoy the process (and sneak in a few relaxed photos before the dress goes on). We’ll also have time to capture both the little moments and the beautiful portraits.

6. Don’t Forget the Emotion

This is such a beautiful part of the day—sharing a letter, a hug with your parents, a first look with your wedding party. These emotional beats are some of the most powerful images you’ll look back on. Let them happen naturally, and trust me to document them as they unfold.

7. Trust Your Photographer

Ultimately, this part of the day is about connection and feeling present. I’ll gently guide where needed, but I’m mostly there to observe, anticipate, and capture the realness of the morning. Your only job? Take it all in.

The “getting ready” photos set the tone for the day’s story—and when done right, they’re filled with meaning, beauty, and joy. With a little planning and trust, they’ll be some of your favorite frames

If you’re dreaming of a Chicago engagement session that blends city views with nature, Lincoln Park and North Avenue Beach are a perfect pair. Between the skyline backdrop, lake breeze, and the architectural charm of the Honeycomb structure, this area offers endless variety within just a short walk.

Christine and Justin’s engagement session was one of those perfect early June afternoons that make you fall in love with Chicago all over again. We started near the Grant statue, using the surrounding architecture and pathways for a classic city-meets-park feel.

These two showed up looking effortlessly put together. They were cute, casual, and completely themselves. From the very first shot, they were naturals. They leaned right into my quirky guidance, laughed through every prompt – even the purposely silly ones – and brought such an easy, genuine energy to the session.

After exploring the park, we made our way over to North Avenue Beach. They danced and laughed, and we took in the gorgeous blue sky/classic Chicago skyline.

Toward the end, they even started suggesting a few fun photo ideas of their own—goofy, spontaneous shots that had all three of us laughing. Those candid moments ended up being some of my favorites from the day.

Julia and Luke’s Spring engagement session in Lincoln Park:

Some couples just radiate joy — and Julia and Luke are absolutely one of those couples. We met for their engagement session on a classic spring day in Chicago: full of soft light, vibrant blooms, and plenty of wind (the kind that turns your hair into a character of its own). But despite the gusts, these two never stopped smiling — and their connection made every frame worth it.

We started in Lincoln Park, where the trees were already bursting with vibrant spring color — pinks, whites, and greens all around us, creating the perfect backdrop for such a sweet couple. Julia and Luke have a way of putting each other instantly at ease. The laughs came naturally, the glances were genuine, and there was such an easy rhythm between them, which made perfect sense once I learned their story.

Julia and Luke actually started out as friends back in college, which, after spending a few minutes with them, makes total sense. There’s an easy comfort between them, the kind that comes from knowing each other for years. Over time, that friendship turned into something more, and now here we are getting ready to celebrate their wedding day.

After Lincoln Park, we made our way down to North Avenue Beach. The wind didn’t let up — if anything, it picked up — but Julia and Luke embraced it. They ran, danced, practiced a few unforgettable lifts, held on to each other for warmth, and looked out at the skyline together — a perfect mix of playful and intimate moments.

Congratulations, Julia and Luke! Cannot wait to celebrate your wedding day!

A Winter Engagement Session in Lincoln Park:

There’s something incredibly magical about winter in Chicago—especially when you’re bundled up with the one you love, sipping warm coffee and exploring the city’s hidden gems. This January, I had the absolute joy of capturing an engagement session that perfectly blended cozy city vibes with natural beauty, all set in the heart of Lincoln Park.

We kicked off the session at Elaine’s Coffee Call, tucked inside the Hotel Lincoln. If you haven’t been, Elaine’s is the kind of spot that feels like a warm hug. The smell of espresso, the vintage charm, and the quiet hum of locals reading or catching up with friends—it’s the perfect pre-shoot meeting point, especially on a chilly Chicago afternoon.

Lorena and Nick grabbed their go-to drinks, snuggled into the window seat, and just existed in that sweet space between excitement and calm. Those early photos? Soft laughter, stolen glances, fingers intertwined around paper cups—pure magic.

We made our way into Lincoln Park, letting the skyline peek through leafless trees, and the occasional snow-covered path set the scene. Even in winter, this park is stunning. The bare branches, soft light reflecting off the snow, and quiet calmness made it feel like we had the whole place to ourselves.

We paused near the South Pond Nature Boardwalk, with the Honeycomb Pavilion giving us a bit of architectural flair where they twirled and walked hand-in-hand ever so sweetly.

A Note on Winter Sessions

To all the couples out there thinking winter is too cold for photos—don’t sleep on January. The light is softer, the city feels more intimate, and with a great coat and the right coffee shop, you’ll never even notice the chill.

So excited for the wedding!
